More than any other 20th century humorist, Will Rogers enriched the lives and outlook of Americans wherever he went. Few subjects escaped his homespun wit, but he especially enjoyed poking fun at American politics and our social misfortunes. He was a friend of presidents and laborers, the wealthy and the downtrodden, and never met a man he didn’t like. Starting out as a trick roper in the Zeigfeld Follies, Will Rogers later landed in Hollywood where he made over 70 motion pictures. In 1934, only a year before his death, he was the biggest male box office star in the country. Rogers was also the most widely read newspaper columnist in the world, and constantly in demand as a speaker and lecturer. During some of the darkest years in our nation’s history, the “Cherokee Cowboy” made Americans look at themselves in a way few had done before or since. And when they did, it made them laugh. Veteran actor, Richard Hoag, brings this great American hero to life, capturing his indomitable spirit, his small-town common sense, his moral courage and his irrepressible good humor. He lovingly conveys Rogers’ cowboy philosophies on a variety of subjects, all relevant to today. The program is easily adaptable to almost any venue (stage, auditorium, classroom, etc.), requiring a minimum of space. Mr. Hoag performs all or part of the full ninety-minute presentation, depending on the desired program. Where audio-visual capabilities permit, Will Rogers’ America is augmented by actual film clips of Rogers’ life and career. |
